In a recent interview, Jada Pinkett Smith revealed that she and her husband Will Smith have been living separately since 2016. Despite maintaining separate lives for seven years, they chose not to publicly acknowledge their separation until now. According to Pinkett Smith, they were both emotionally drained from their efforts to make the relationship work. Although they continue to live apart, they have no plans to divorce. Pinkett Smith, aged 52, expressed her commitment to never breaking the promise she made to herself and Smith, aged 55, about avoiding divorce. She reflected on their mutual struggle to align their expectations with reality, admitting that they were stuck in their idealized perceptions of each other. This interview coincides with the upcoming release of Pinkett Smith's memoir, "Worthy."


The couple made headlines the previous year when Will Smith interrupted the Oscars ceremony, slapping host Chris Rock and vehemently defending his wife's honor after a joke about her hair loss due to alopecia. Pinkett Smith initially thought it was part of a scripted skit, only realizing it was real when Smith returned to his seat. She expressed her support for her husband in dealing with the consequences.


Speculation about their marriage arose in 2020 when they addressed Pinkett Smith's "entanglement" with artist August Alsina on her Facebook show, Red Table Talk. Will and Jada first crossed paths in 1994 during Pinkett Smith's audition for Will's show, "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air."
